A worker has died and another left critically injured after a concrete boom collapsed at a Carlingford construction site. The police and WorkSafe are investigating the incident.

Emergency services responded to a construction site in Carlingford after a concrete boom, owned by subcontractor Lemo's Concrete Pumping, collapsed and trapped two workers. One worker in his 30s was transported to Westmead Hospital with critical spinal injuries, while another in his 40s was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital and later died from his injuries. 

A nearby worker reported that the incident may have been caused by the stabiliser of the concrete boom sinking into the ground, potentially due to recent heavy rainfall. The site had previously been evacuated in June due to concerns over a faulty crane. The incident has been referred to WorkSafe, and police and forensic teams are investigating.

Alexandra, emergency services, including seven ambulances and a medical chopper, rushed to this Merriton worksite in Carlingford shortly after 9am this morning. Lemo's Concrete Pumping, which is a subcontractor on site, owns the concrete boom which is believed to have crushed two of the workers. Earlier I was speaking with one of the nearby construction workers who says the two men became pinned under the boom's arm for at least 15 minutes. He also believes the stabiliser for the concrete boom had sunk into the ground due to the heavy rainfall over the last few days, which is what contributed to the accident taking place. One male in his 30s was rushed to Westmead Hospital with critical spinal injuries, while the other in his 40s went to Royal North Shore, however has succumbed to his injuries and passed away. Now this all comes after the same worksite forced hundreds of Carlingford residents to evacuate their homes and businesses in June due to strong winds threatening the stability of one of their faulty cranes, which posed a danger to the surrounding areas. Now today's incident has been referred to WorkSafe, while police and forensics remain on site as they investigate exactly how this freak accident happened.

The ruling comes a month after Brazil’s top court ordered the former president to wear an ankle monitor, submit to a curfew and abide by limitations on his activity as legal proceedings investigating an alleged coup plot continue.
