Asma Hanzawi, founder of the first all-female Gnaoua group Benat Timbuktu, performed alongside Malian artist Rikia Kone, showcasing cross-cultural collaboration. Hind Naira, a newcomer to the festival, represented the new generation of female Gnaoua artists, highlighting the ongoing transformation of the genre.

Recognised by UNESCO in 2019, Gunewa is a spiritual music and a community of sub-Saharan origin in Morocco. Once an all-male tradition, the 26th edition shines a spotlight on women redefining the genre. Leading the way is Asma Hanzawi, who founded the first all-female Gunewa group 10 years ago. My parents are Gunewa. I grew up in this world, so I have my place here. Thank God I continue to play the music. I have my audience. There are people who love female Gunewa. It makes me happy and motivates me to keep going. Asama named her group Benat Timbuktu. She's performed in Mali and for this festival, she's invited a powerful Malian voice, Rikia Kone. Together they share the stage on a symbolic track Mariama Sise. I was so proud of this collaboration. I hope we'll continue working together and maybe I'll bring their culture into my songs. It was a first, but I hope it won't be the last. Another revelation, Hind Naira. Born in Asura, she didn't come from a Gunewa family, but chose this path out of passion. She's debuting at the festival this year, embodying the new generation of female artists, slowly but surely making their mark in a world once dominated by men. A lot of girls ask me for advice and I'm always ready to help. The message is clear. Women are here to stay in the world of Gunewa and their voices are making a lasting impact.
