Hikers found a woman's body near a Colorado trail, and officials believe a mountain lion may have attacked her.

A woman was fatally attacked by a mountain lion on a trail a few miles from the eastern entrance of Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. Hikers discovered the woman and saw a mountain lion nearby, which they scared away before confirming the woman had no pulse.

Wildlife officials are investigating the incident as a suspected fatal mountain lion attack and have euthanized two mountain lions for necropsies to check for diseases and human DNA. Fatal mountain lion attacks are rare in Colorado, with the last one occurring in the 1990s.

Colorado wildlife mountain lion attacked and killed a woman on New Year's Day. That attack happened on a trail just a few miles outside of the eastern entrance to the Rocky Mountain National Park. According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife, hikers spotted a woman down on the trail and also a mountain lion about 100 yards away. As they started to get closer, they started to scare the lion from the area by throwing rocks at the animal and it eventually went away. But they found an adult woman lying on the trail. One of the witnesses is a physician and did not find a pulse. We are investigating investigating this as a suspected fatal mountain lion attack. CBS News correspondent Carter Evans live for us now. Carter, what are you hearing from those wildlife officials about those two mountain lions? So they're trying to track down the mountain lion that did this because clearly this particular lion is comfortable getting close to human beings and that is not a good thing. They shot two of them. They euthanized two of them and basically what they're going to be doing now is necropsies on the animals. They want to see if they had any diseases, perhaps avian flu, perhaps rabies. They also want to check inside their mouths and intestines and see if they have any human DNA and that will confirm if it was in fact the mountain lion or mountain lions that did this. So horrible for the family. A lot of people love being out in the mountains. Help us to understand how rare something like this is. So it is rare and in some some people might say extremely rare. It's happened about 28 times since the 80s in Colorado and not fatal. These are just mountain lion attacks. The last fatal mountain lion attack in Colorado was back in the 90s. Here in California it actually happens a little more frequently. I've seen mountain lions out on trails and it's scary because a lot of times you don't see them until you're right up on them because they're watching you and your instincts to run away are exactly wrong because if you run that triggers the cat's instinct to chase. So what you're supposed to do is get very big, get very loud, get very assertive and if the animal starts approaching you throw rocks, throw sticks but stand your ground and slowly back away.
