Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall and the City Council expressed concern over the operation, noting that local law enforcement was not involved and questioning the federal agents' methods. ICE confirmed the arrest was a targeted operation, as Renderos-Leyva had been ordered deported in 2020 after arriving from El Salvador in 2007.

We're learning more about a woman who was detained by ICE agents at the Salt Lake City International Airport on Wednesday. I'm FOX 13 news reporter Maite Ligobi, I'll show you some of that video and how city leaders are reacting. It's very sad when I can see a mother cry for your son, for your family and I don't know what happened. Patricia is a leader in Utah's Latino community, helping organize a group called Utazolanos. She's talking about this video, recorded at the Salt Lake City Airport Wednesday around four in the afternoon, of ICE agents arresting a woman near the baggage claim. Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall released a statement after watching this video circulating online on social media. She said in part, quote, I am left wondering and aching from the fear and pain these types of operations keep striking in my heart and the hearts of so many of us. She shared some of her questions about the incident. Why were the agents in plain clothes without visible identification? Why did they choose the lobby of the airport, the gateway to our state where some 28,000 people enter every day? Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall says that local law enforcement were not involved in this operation. A Salt Lake City police officer responded to the scene after hearing the commotion there, but he did back away after the federal agents provided their identification. We reached out to ICE and they told us the woman arrested was 39-year-old Martha Briseida Renderos-Leyva, who was here undocumented. She came to the U.S. in 2007 from El Salvador and was ordered by a judge to be deported in 2020. This was a targeted operation to take her into custody. The Salt Lake City Council also released a statement saying, quote, we are aware of an arrest conducted by federal immigration agents, which is unusual at the Salt Lake City International Airport. Incidents like this create fear and uncertainty in our community. I think what happened, what did this woman, I don't know, for tomorrow maybe my neighbor or neighbor, my son, my friend.
