Meanwhile, the coalition suggests nuclear power as an alternative, with coal filling the gap until nuclear energy becomes available. They have assured residents of Wollongong that their area will not be a potential site for these developments, though the exact locations are yet to be disclosed.

The debate over offshore wind farms is not limited to Illawarra. There are similar discussions taking place in six other regions across Australia, including the New South Wales Hunter Coast, northern Tasmania, and Bunbury off the Western Australia coast. The coalition acknowledges that some projects, like the fixed wind farm in Gippsland, do not face the same issues as floating technologies.

Supporters of the Illawarra wind farm argue that it is ideal for offshore wind technology, given its proximity to shore and consistent energy availability. However, as the climate wars reignite, every project is expected to encounter significant opposition.

This next election here in the Illawarra and everywhere across this country is a referendum about do these people have to have their life taken away. I haven't got a uni degree, but I know deep in my heart the carnage that it's going to do on our ocean floors and to animals that live in the ocean. I think the tide is turning because there are so many people upset with this. The whole thing has been done in such a hurry. The coalition wants nuclear power instead, with coal to fill the gap until nuclear goes online, but with this promise to the people of Wollongong. No, this won't be a potential site. Those locations are yet to be announced. Offshore wind is not one battleground, but six, each with its own issues, from the New South Wales Hunter Coast to northern Tasmania, to a massive potential field off Bunbury off the WA coast. The coalition says it's not against all of them. There's a project down in the Gippsland that doesn't have the issues because one, it's fixed. This is new technology. It's floating. So the Illawarra is an ideal place for offshore wind technology. It's multi gigawatt scale. Two, it's close to the shore, which is where we all live and where we need to use our energy. And three, it's available nearly all of the time. But with the climate wars back on, every project faces headwinds. Hugh Rimington for 10 News First.
