Arizona, California and Utah are all experiencing large wildfires as the region bakes under a heat dome.

Wildfires are burning across multiple states in the US Southwest, with the Monroe Canyon fire in Utah consuming over 61,000 acres and the Dragon Bravo fire in Arizona burning 123,000 acres. Containment efforts have seen minimal progress, with the Dragon Bravo fire only 13% contained and the Gifford fire in California at 3% containment. 

Smoke from these fires is affecting air quality in regions including the Los Angeles basin, western Colorado, and near Elko, Nevada. The region is also experiencing limited monsoon moisture due to a persistent upper-level ridge, contributing to challenging firefighting conditions. Record-challenging high temperatures are expected in cities such as Phoenix, Tucson, and parts of Texas and New Mexico.

Wildfires grow across the Southwest

As we take a look at some fires that are burning in neighboring nearby states, the Monroe Canyon fire in Utah, 61,000 plus acres burnt. The new update this afternoon for the Dragon Bravo fire in Arizona, 123,000 acres burnt now. Containment increased by one percentage point to 13%, so still more bad news there than good. And the Gifford fire in California, 65,000 acres burnt, 3% containment. So overall, smoke from the Gifford fire is drifting down, kind of filling parts of the Los Angeles basin. But the smoke from the fires in Arizona and Utah being swept across Colorado, western Colorado has some wildfire activity. There's some smoke trapped near Elko, Nevada as well, so air quality is not so good in the southwest. And the monsoon moisture is extraordinarily slim with this big upper-level ridge parked over the region. So we'll close with a look at some record-challenging highs for Wednesday as the heat builds over the next few days. We're likely to see records fall in Phoenix, Tucson, Bordure, Texas will be close, and Clayton, New Mexico.
