From coast to coast, thousands of Canadians have had to flee their homes because of wildfires, and many more are experiencing smoky skies with potentially dangerous air quality.

Residents and their animals have been forced to leave their homes, with some experiencing repeated evacuations within a short period. Firefighters and volunteers are working to protect properties, while local officials report that some fires are under investigation.

Weather conditions vary across the country, with intense heat in the prairies and shifting winds on the coasts. Meteorologists note that while temperatures are not extreme on the coasts, variable winds and dry conditions continue to pose challenges. Smoke from the fires has caused significant air quality issues, particularly in Toronto and other major cities, with some improvement expected midweek but lingering effects likely.

At 150 acres, that fire has grown six times in size since Monday morning. The mayor of the area says they've already been hit by multiple fires this summer. They're highly suspicious. I'll put it that way. They are being investigated. On the West Coast, hundreds of people on Vancouver Island have escaped the Wesley Ridge fire. Hundreds more on evacuation alert. We've probably packed and unpacked and packed and unpacked three or four times now. We do have a river and a highway in between us and where the fire currently is, so it gives me maybe a false sense of security. Officials say the fire northwest of Nanaimo saw limited growth overnight, but it's still out of control. Ari Buttenham has been helping out with his tow truck. He saved one man's tiny home. I think he was fully prepared to just call it quits and leave it, and for anyone that knows me, I'm not really that type of person. In Winnipeg, some shelter evacuees say their kids are making their own playground. They need to come out. They can't be locked up in that little space forever. More than 3,000 people are leaving Nisishiaweasik Cree Nation. For some, it's their second evacuation in under a month. I've never seen anything like this. Continuous fires, continuous smoke, no rain. And elsewhere in Canada, like Toronto, smoke is still choking the air. Some relief is expected in the coming days. Ian Fraze, CBC News, Winnipeg. We're joined now by CBC meteorologist Johanna Wagstaff. Johanna, how will weather conditions impact the wildfires in the coming days? Well, Asha, we're seeing very different conditions across the country. The good news for both coasts is that temperatures are not extreme. That intense heat is centred in the prairies. Take a look at this. That's where the heat is, and it's the coasts that are dealing with shifting weather conditions. For the east, gusty winds are the big story, picking up as a front moves through Tuesday and Wednesday. Temperatures will actually drop through the day Tuesday before rebounding midweek. But variable winds will remain the concern for the east coast. Out here on the west, the weather pattern begins to shift midweek, bringing a few millimetres to Vancouver Island. A lot of soaking, but, Asha, hopefully some help as conditions turn dry right after that. Wildfire smoke, right? It is leading to major air quality concerns. What can we expect on that front? Yeah, we continue to see some of the worst air quality on the planet this morning, especially around the Toronto area. The smoke, that source, coming from the wildfires in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and those alerts stretching right across to Newfoundland. As we head into the forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday, that big high-pressure dome bringing the heat to the prairies, that's causing the jet stream to loop smoke up and over down across the Great Lakes. So that set-up holds again tomorrow, but by midweek, the jet stream moves north. That should bring some improvement, but, Asha, it's not a total clear-up.
