An N.L. elementary school has been destroyed by wildfire. Now, with other schools in the region being used as hubs for firefighters and evacuees, parents and children remain uncertain about the start of the school year.

A wildfire in Newfoundland and Labrador has destroyed Cabot Academy School in Western Bay, displacing 60 students and 11 staff who now need alternate placements. Hundreds of families in Conception Bay North remain evacuated, and 12 other schools in the region are being used for wildfire support efforts. 

The Department of Education has assured families that all students and staff will have placements for the new school year and does not anticipate delays in school openings. However, parents remain concerned about possible disruptions, including the separation of children who usually attend school together, and are calling for efforts to keep classmates united during this challenging time.

Wildfire evacuees uncertain about the start of the school year

Unfortunately, Cabot Academy School in Western Bay has been lost. Education Minister Bernard Davis shared that staggering news at the provincial wildfire update. And with Cabot Academy gone, that means 60 students and 11 staff will need to be placed in alternate schools this September. This comes as hundreds of families in Conception Bay North are still evacuated from their homes due to the Kingston wildfire. So with schools reopening in just a few weeks, children are starting to ask grown-ups what will happen in September. And we know that school is going to start. How it is going to start is the question. So we have a lot of people or the children are asking me, like, are we going to be online? I don't know. We'll see. And families that no longer have a home say they don't know what they're going to do when the school year starts. As close as the school year is, it's kind of unfortunately on the back burner right now because we have to get through this evacuation and then try to pick up the pieces as a community and as a family. In addition to one school being destroyed by the fire, another 12 schools in the region are being used to support wildfire efforts. But the Department of Education says it isn't anticipating delays in school openings and is assuring families, students and staff that everyone in Conception Bay North will have somewhere to go in September. All students and staff will have a place in a classroom or a position at a school this upcoming school year. Within our education system, everyone will be ready to help. If a student is in a different community or an educator or staff member can't return to their home, we will welcome you into a school community that is convenient for you. But parents are uncertain and fear that whatever comes next will split up children that usually go to school together. I really hope the Minister of Education is hearing this and sees this. Please don't separate these kids. Keep them together. They need each other. They need that support. They need that friendship. You know, we can't separate the classes. Firefighters and water bombers continue to fight the fire throughout the day.
