Most of us probably prepare for spring allergies, but fall can bring on the same kind of sneezing, runny nose and other miserable allergy symptoms. The culprit is ragweed pollen.

Ragweed, a plant found in nearly every state, releases pollen that triggers allergies in over 23 million Americans. The severity of ragweed allergy symptoms increases in autumn due to environmental changes, including lower humidity, drier air, and seasonal breezes, which elevate pollen levels. Each ragweed plant is capable of producing up to a billion pollen grains, making it difficult for those affected to avoid exposure.

Why ragweed allergy symptoms worse in the fall

When autumn leaves start to fall, so does ragweed pollen. Ragweed grows in nearly every state, and more than 23 million Americans are allergic. But why is it so bad in fall? The plant starts releasing pollen in August, but then September brings lower humidity, drier conditions, and that wonderful autumn breeze that all bring the pollen to peak levels. And it's hard to avoid, because each ragweed plant can produce up to 1 billion pollen grains.
