Republican State Assemblyman Carl DeMeo is organizing against it. Democrat State Senator Caroline Menjivar is working to get yes votes. So, I'm just knocking on doors here in the San Fernando Valley, my community. The race in California comes after Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed legislation in August that the GOP hopes could elect five more Republicans to the House. Texas is now more red in the United States Congress. California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom fired back. We're neutralizing what occurred, and we're giving the American people a fair chance. Then Missouri followed, and at least six other states are considering it. There's this kind of race to the bottom. Richard Hassan is director of the Safeguarding Democracy Project at UCLA's law school. I think Democrats see this, in some ways, as a referendum on Donald Trump. Trump is the one who started this by pressuring Republican states to draw more districts for Republican Party advantage. Roxana Hogue is a Republican Party chairwoman for Los Angeles County. What's your message or your pitch to the independents and those Democrats who may be on the fence about this issue? Well, my pitch is the same. We had a system that didn't reward corruption and politicians. That system is fine. Leave it alone by voting no on Prop 50. Professor Hassan says a national policy is needed. Unless we have fundamental reform, for example, Congress could pass a law making partisan gerrymandering and congressional elections illegal.
