Donald Trump has signed an order to impose tariffs imports into the U.S. from countries including China, Mexico and Canada.

The White House has stated that Apple will remain largely unaffected by the newly announced U.S. tariffs on India. The executive order, which raises tariffs on certain Indian imports to 50%, maintains exemptions for semiconductors and derivative products—categories that cover much of Apple's supply chain. 

The order specifically targets India in response to its purchases of Russian oil, while leaving the door open for potential future action against other countries. Indian officials have indicated they will take necessary steps to protect their interests, and Brazil has requested consultations at the World Trade Organization regarding the tariffs. Despite these developments, the White House is not currently targeting China, the largest buyer of Russian oil, with similar measures.

White House says Apple will remain largely unaffected by India tariffs

Welcome back. We're getting more details on the new tariffs for India. Let's get to Megan Casella at the White House. Hey Megan. Hey Leslie, that's right. So we know now that those India tariffs are set to climb to 25% at midnight tonight and then 50% by the end of the month. August 27th is the effective date but the biggest question or one of them this morning has been whether and to what extent Apple will be impacted by these tariffs. So I've been talking with White House officials about this and what I can tell you now is that the way that this executive order was written is that the 50% tariffs or the increase to 50% effectively doubles the reciprocal tariffs that are already set to be at 25%. So because they're just doubling it, it means the same exemptions continue to remain and those reciprocal tariffs, semiconductors and all derivative products will remain exempt from all of those tariffs. So the increase to 50% will not impact any semiconductors, any derivative products coming in from India and that means that Apple already and will remain largely unaffected by these new tariffs. So the increase in the India tariffs should not impact Apple based on the way this executive order was written. The other key point that I've been looking at here is the way again that the executive order was written is it's about of course buying Russian oil. So that title and everything about it is about buyers of Russian oil. India is explicitly named in this executive order but no other countries are and interestingly to me at least it says that the administration will continue to look at whether other countries are buying indirectly or directly Russian oil and if they decide that other countries are then they will recommend whether and to what extent the president should take additional action. And I flagged that because India is a big buyer of Russian oil but it's number two. China is by far the largest. So very interesting to me that in the way they're doing this today they are not targeting China by any means. They're only using this to hit India and even though China is right there at the top of the list they're clearly trying to keep that relationship on a good path and at least for now not letting Beijing be involved here. Guys. Yeah we mentioned earlier sort of the ad hoc highly customized trade policy that's been implemented over the past several months. By the way the India government Megan's on the tape saying they will take all actions necessary to protect their national interest. Unfortunate the U.S. should choose to impose additional tariffs and at the same time Brazil according to wires this morning says that they have requested consultations to the WTO over tariffs. So it's a busy morning for the BRICS in a sense. It absolutely is and we know that this administration and this president in particular has been targeting BRICS for a couple of months now calling them an anti-american organization. I mean Brazil going to the WTO 10 years ago that was the right way to do things. At this point the World Trade Organization doesn't have a ton of authority on the global stage and enforcing these trading rules anymore. So we'll see where that goes but you're right that they're holding firm. India saying that they're likely to retaliate or at least protect their interests. Russia unlikely to do anything under pressure here. So it's very symbolic and there is going to be some impact on the terror front at least if this does go into effect on August 27th. But for now not having an impact in terms of the geopolitical negotiations. Megan do you think that they're trying to send a signal to China in opting for increasing tariffs related to that Russian oil on India first? Trying to send a signal to China that hey this is important to us but they're still kind of leaving the door open for those negotiations? I would imagine so. This sort of represents to me a card that the U.S. could play but we've been talking for weeks now about how U.S. officials all the way up to the president have been very open saying they have a good relationship with China. Saying talks in Stockholm went well. So I've always wondered why they were continuing to push this tariff on buyers of Russian oil while they were trying to keep those Chinese talks moving forward. Now we know that they're not targeting China with it even though it is a big buyer of Russian oil. So to me it's sort of is looming out there now as something that the way it's written they say they could determine in the future whether another country should be targeted. That would of course be China but they're not doing it yet. So maybe that's part of why we haven't heard yet whether the president is going to extend the August 12th deadline of the tariff truce with China. Maybe this is part of the discussions where at least is something they could turn to if ultimately they feel like China isn't fulfilling some other aspect of the talks. And of course President Trump saying yesterday on CNBC that he will meet with China's Xi if a trade deal is ultimately struck. Megan thank you.
