White Hills Resort in Clarenville, Newfoundland and Labrador, is nearing the opening of its winter ski and snowboard season. Snowmaking guns are operating across the hill to build a solid base, with crews focusing on preparing the Easy Street and beginner areas for initial use. 

The resort, which features 27 downhill trails, will open with one trail as staff continue snowmaking and final preparations. New general manager Steve Inkpen, a lifelong skier, emphasizes the importance of man-made snow for season longevity and is optimistic about welcoming the community once weather conditions permit.

There are snowmaking guns at the summit, guns in the middle of the hill, and guns near the base, all working to provide a solid base for skiing and snowboarding. Really excited about it. We finally got some good weather, cold temperatures. We started it up yesterday right after the low pressure moved out and got it going for last night. We're getting some really good yields up there. Spirits are high, hard work is paying off. It's pretty exciting. White Hills Resort has 27 downhill trails, but they won't be ready for opening. New GM Steve Inkpen says crews will start with the one trail and keep working their way across the hill. Man-made snow is a lot tougher than natural snow. It holds up really well. So although we do have a significant amount of natural snow, one good mild spell, rainy spell, could end it. So there's spots up there we need three feet of snow just for good coverage, and to ensure longevity to the season, not getting cut short, we need that man-made base. Steve Inkpen is a lifelong skier who left his work as an electrician to take over the hill this season. White Hills is in his blood. After watching it and critiquing the operations over the years, as all skiers do, you really kind of get a feel for what's involved behind the scenes and how much work really goes into getting this place off the ground. I can't wait to, you know, get some smiling faces up here. Have the fun to start now that we've got all this prep work done. Really looking forward to skiing myself as well as the rest of the ski community. He's hoping the hill will open next weekend. We're ready now. We were kind of striving to open this weekend. It was borderline unrealistic, but I'd say if we can get Easy Street and the beginner area shaped out here, we're pretty much ready. It'll be a busy few days for crews here at White Hills as the snowmaking continues and staff put the finishing touches on what's needed for the opening of another season.
