The American military presence in the region is only a fraction of the size, around 15,000 men, but it boasts some of the most advanced military hardware, including the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier and the F-35 combat aircraft. Venezuela's government has maintained stability in recent years by installing military officials in key governmental positions, and expanded its militia system to help protect the country from foreign forces. The U.S. has been carrying out attacks on alleged drug-smuggling boats since September. Washington accuses Venezuela's military of playing an active role in trafficking, something the country's military leaders deny.
