A whale was spotted weaving between ferries and near the Sydney Harbour Bridge, captivating onlookers with its rare proximity to the city. The animal was first seen in Circular Quay and later at Balmoral Beach, drawing excitement from both the public and marine scientists. Authorities worked to keep boats at a safe distance while monitoring the whale, which is believed to be on its migration route to Antarctica. Such close encounters with whales near human structures are uncommon, though the region is known for regular whale sightings during migration season, which continues for several more months.

Talk about making a splash! This surprise visitor knew how to put on a show, weaving between ferries and bobbing around the bridge on a sightseeing tour of Sydney's blue backyard. It's like, where is it, where is it? It sort of popped out and tail flukes out of the water, it's quite beautiful. The gentle giant was first spotted in Circular Quay this morning. By the afternoon it was saying hello to beachgoers at Balmoral. Look at that! Look at those people's school holidays and they're seeing a whale there! Perhaps no one was quite as excited as whale scientist Vanessa Perotta. Holy dooly! Just wait! Ten on ten, hold on! She spent the day on the water babysitting the big baby on its detour en route to Antarctica. What an amazing whale watching experience. Working alongside authorities tasked with keeping other boats well clear. A little bit of complexity with the traffic movements and the ferries but nothing we can't handle on a day to day basis. It's not uncommon for whales to pit stop in our pristine waters. It is rare for them to end up so close to human structures. See any whales? No. Sadly. Did you see any whales this morning? No. Oh no, what a shame! If you missed out on today's impromptu show, don't worry, whale watching season is far from over with the so-called Humpback Highway staying open until October.
