WFP's deputy executive director called for urgent action to prevent similar crises in other besieged areas and highlighted the need for comprehensive humanitarian responses.

According to the World Health Organization, over 40,000 people have been killed in the ongoing conflict, while the United Nations reports that 12 million have been displaced. The WFP is intensifying its aid efforts for those fleeing El-Fasher and continues to demand access to other affected regions to provide life-saving assistance.

The deputy executive director of the WFP expressed outrage over the terrible atrocities that recently took place in the city of al-Fashir in Sudan's Darfur region. We are outraged about the terrible atrocities that we have witnessed in al-Fashir over the past couple of weeks. It should have been prevented and we now really need to step up efforts to prevent these catastrophes for happening elsewhere, including in places like Adugli where we have been insisting on having access for several months. It's besieged and we will continue to insist on access there. Last month, the Rapid Support Forces seized al-Fashir, the capital of north Darfur, and rampaged through a Saudi hospital in the city, killing more than 450 people, according to the World Health Organization. The WFP said it's scaling up its assistance to help thousands fleeing the city and seeking safety in various locations. Hungry people are not only dying of hunger, they also die of related diseases that spring also out of lack of water and sanitation. And so we need a comprehensive response to this massive crisis. And as I said, rightly the attention now is on al-Fashir and the atrocities and the terrible conditions there. But we cannot forget that in Cordoba and in Kadugli and other places we have similar conditions and we need to prevent that the same catastrophe happen there and that we insist on that these besiegements are ending and that we can assist people in accordance with international humanitarian law. The WHO says the fighting has killed at least 40,000 people and the United Nations says another 12 million have been displaced.
