Health authorities in Colorado have reported an increase in West Nile virus cases, with at least 11 confirmed infections and one death. Dr. Andrew Wolf, a neurologist at UC Health, emphasized that individuals over 55, those with preexisting health conditions, and people taking immunosuppressive medications are at higher risk and should take additional precautions.

West Nile virus is primarily spread through mosquito bites, and most cases occur between July and October. Dr. Wolf recommends wearing long sleeves and pants, using mosquito repellent, limiting outdoor activity during dawn and dusk, and removing standing water from properties to reduce mosquito breeding. Anyone experiencing symptoms is advised to seek medical attention promptly.

At last check, at least 11 people in our state have West Nile virus, and at least one person has died. According to information from the state, I spoke with Doctor Andrew Wolf, who works as an attending neurologist at UC Health, who says people who are over 55 or who might have preexisting health needs need to take extra precautions. West Nile is most commonly spread through mosquito bites. Wolf explained to me that West Nile has a peak of concentration of cases. Between July and October in Colorado, so most patients, and that's 80%, do not know if they have it. Wolf told me while West Nile is a concern for everyone, he gets especially concerned for those who are over the age of 55. People with underlying health conditions like diabetes and people on immunosuppressive medications so how can you keep yourself safe if you are in one of those communities? Doctor Wolf has this advice. Take a listen. So there's a few things that are pretty easy to do to accomplish that. So one is wearing long sleeves and pants and using mosquito repellent. So there is, you know, hopefully reduce the risk of getting insect bites. Two is trying to limit time outside at dawn and at dusk when we know mosquitoes are more active and then three depending on capabilities are doing things around your property. If you have standing water, mosquitoes like to breed in standing water, so reducing that Doctor Wolf tells me if you're not feeling well, you know you feel like you might have West Nile virus.
