Scientists working with the Schmidt Ocean Institute reveal the first footage of two elusive sea animals: the colossal squid and a type of glass squid.

Scientists associated with the Schmidt Ocean Institute have released groundbreaking footage of two elusive marine animals. The team captured the colossal squid on camera for the first time in its natural Antarctic habitat. Although known to science for a century, this marks the first confirmed footage of the species in the wild. Scientists consider the recorded squid to be juvenile, as it has not yet reached full maturity. The colossal squid is the largest squid species globally, growing up to an estimated 23 feet in length and weighing nearly half a ton. 

In addition to the colossal squid, researchers also documented the glass squid, known as Galatoothis glacialis, alive for the first time. The exploration team emphasized the fragility and beauty of many deep-sea creatures such as these. These observations were part of the team's recent voyages aimed at studying oceanic depths near Antarctica.

I started hyperventilating, I teared up. We have never seen this animal in the wild before. We've known about the colossal squid for a century, but this is our first confirmed footage of the mysterious creature in its native habitat. We could think of this maybe as a teenager squid. It's not quite an adult. It hasn't fully matured yet. It's still got a lot of growing to do. The colossal squid will grow up to an estimated 23 feet long, weighing as much as half a ton, the largest squid species on Earth. And it's not the only underwater animal the team of explorers and scientists working with the Schmidt Ocean Institute found during its last two voyages to study the deeps near Antarctica. This is Galatoothis glacialis. This is the first time it has been seen alive. And again, it reiterates that a lot of the deepsea animals are actually really fragile and really beautiful.
