It is, after all, a test flight for all those future missions NASA hopes will follow. Here's how the days after the launch are expected to play out. While Orion is in high Earth orbit, the crew is expected to put the spacecraft through its paces, testing out its manoeuvrability and function while still relatively close to Earth. Then on day two, one of those history-making moments, a trans-lunar injection burn should push Orion out of Earth's orbit, making the astronauts the first humans to travel into deep space in more than 50 years. Precision will be key, because this move isn't just setting up the crew's path to the Moon, but their way home as well. The journey should take a few days, as the crew continues to test out their equipment and spacecraft. Then the moment so many are waiting for, Orion is expected to fly behind the Moon, the part you can't see by looking up at the night sky. The crew is going to spend a day in lunar observation. So they're going to basically spend the day giving their observations on the far side of the Moon, which hasn't been seen, parts of it hasn't been seen by human eyes before. The crew is expected to travel further than anyone has ever been from Earth. As Orion slingshots around the Moon, it will then be drawn home by the Earth's gravity. As it approaches, the crew module will separate from the spacecraft's service module, which houses the engine, before it enters the Earth's atmosphere at more than 40,000 km an hour. A heat shield should protect it from the blistering temperatures. And a series of parachutes should slow it down before it splashes down in the Pacific. During this flight, we will learn how the spacecraft behaves. Through our research campaign, we will also learn how we, human beings, behave in that same environment. The combination of these two things will help us optimize our time in future missions. Artemis 2 is just one step in a bigger campaign. NASA wants to put humans on the Moon again within a couple of years, and eventually explore landing on Mars.
