Remote voting for the Voice referendum is underway with the Electoral Commission travelling thousands of kilometres to visit hundreds of communities in some of the most remote parts of Australia. It's a huge logistical undertaking that's already facing big challenges encouraging people to take part in areas with traditionally low voter turn out.

Signs are up and teams are ready to go. Remote polling for the voice referendum is underway. Using boats, planes, helicopters and four-wheel drives, the Electoral Commission will trek thousands of kilometres in the coming weeks to places like Wirramayunga on the Northern Territory's Tiwi Islands. I strongly believe that, you know, people talk for us in Canberra. Yeah, but yes, we need some changes. The massive logistical operation sees hundreds of workers visit more than 750 communities across the country. A big effort to reach even the smallest of homelands, some with as little as 10 people. But I'm also about getting out and informing people about Aboriginal rights. It's a little like setting up a Fortune 500 company in about four weeks and dismantling it a week after the event. The Remote Voter Service will be travelling to communities for the next three weeks to encourage people to cast a ballot in regions with low voter turnouts. But there's already problems. A death on the Tiwi Islands has drawn nearly everyone away for sorry business, and many will likely miss out on a vote. We're dealing with that and people being disengaged from the voting system, not because they don't want to vote, but because there's a lot of sadness in the community at the moment. Despite the traditionally low voter turnout, remote communities will see more services than ever before, with remote voting extended by a week to try and ensure everyone gets a say.
