Friday sees the start of the general election in India. Voting in the world's largest democracy will last nearly six weeks. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is seeking a third term. But the ruling BJP is criticized for promoting a Hindu nationalist agenda and cracking down on the opposition.

Voting set to begin in India's national election

One of the last election campaigning events before the first phase of voting begins a six-week cycle. The state of Manipur in the northeast of India has been rocked by violence between the Hindu majority Meitei and Kukizor tribal communities since last May. As a youth, we don't want a gunfight, we want a peaceful coexistence between all the communities. The ruling BJP enters the election on a high note, claiming the turbocharged Indian economy is one of its major achievements. But high unemployment, policy mistakes and economic anxiety driven by soaring prices concern voters. The son of a tea-seller, 73-year-old BJP leader Narendra Modi is seen as his party's most effective weapon. If you give one vote to the Congress party or the communists, they cannot form a government at the center. Your vote will go waste. Hence your vote should go to the BJP, which will form the government. That is my guarantee. Twenty-six opposition parties have created an alliance to stop the BJP. They accuse the government of using state agencies to crack down on the opposition. Congress party politician Priyanka Gandhi says the ruling party won't secure victory if there is a level playing field. If the elections are free and fair, where the voting machines are not tampered with, then I can say confidently they cannot win more than 180 seats. The BJP has successfully marketed its Hindu nationalist brand of politics in a nation where 80 percent of the population is Hindu. But analysts say it's not the only factor for the party's success. Welfare benefits, leadership, weakness of opposition, so there are multitudes of things. Hindu polarization or any single issue cannot win any party election. But not everyone is buying the BJP pitch. Tamil Nadu politicians have rejected what they call religious and caste-based politics, while others are weary. Because for poor people and for daily wages, his party and his government have not done anything for their growth. Ten years ago, Modi first campaigned on a platform of hope. His second term urged trust. And as he seeks a third term, he is guaranteeing that he will make India a bigger and better country for its 1.4 billion people.
