Early voting for the Voice to Parliament referendum begins in half of Australia's states and territories today, with the remaining jurisdictions to follow tomorrow. It's less than two weeks before the country's first referendum in almost 25 years.

Well, early voting opens today in four jurisdictions ahead of that October 14 date, which is just two weeks away, where Australians will vote on whether to enshrine an independent advisory body for First Nations people into the Constitution. Now, that's obviously the first referendum we've had in almost 25 years, and voters in the Northern Territory, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia will be eligible to vote from today, and then early voting will open up in New South Wales, the ACT, Queensland and South Australia tomorrow after their public holiday ends. The Electoral Commission has already started carrying out some of that voting in remote polling locations, and it says that this referendum will have the largest number of eligible Australians on the electoral roll, at more than 97%, and there's also a record high Indigenous enrolment and voters aged 18 to 24. Now, ABC News Breakfast did speak to Assistant Minister for Indigenous Australians, Malindiri McCarthy. She says that the lessons from this referendum will be seen during the wash-up after that vote on October 14, no matter what the outcome is. Here's what she had to say. At the end of last year, you had the Nationals walk away even before we had the conversation. So there's been many steps along the way that I think a lot of people could reflect on and think maybe they could have done things differently, and no doubt we will also do that post the 14th of October, but we are doing the best that we can. We are asking Australians to accept that this is an important time in our history and please come with us on the journey. It's obviously now crunch time for both campaigns. We can expect some of the Yes camp in Melbourne today and some of the No camp in Perth, obviously both cities where early voting has started today.
