The unrest resulted in at least five deaths and over 100 injuries, including both protesters and police officers. Witnesses claim that police opened fire on what began as a peaceful protest after stone-throwing broke out on both sides. Amid the chaos, vehicles and government buildings, including the local office of the ruling BJP party, were set on fire.

Authorities have responded by enforcing curfews and limiting gatherings in key districts, deploying hundreds of police and paramilitary officers. Local representatives have engaged in several rounds of talks with Indian officials in recent years, with another meeting scheduled for early October.

Ladakh's young people want change. What started as a protest for greater autonomy descended into violent clashes when protesters threw stones at police. They fired back, killing at least five people. In total, more than 100 people were injured, including 30 police officers and these men. We were protesting peacefully. They shot at a peaceful protest and that's why so many people were injured. When our protest started, both sides also started throwing stones. Then they started firing at us and I got shot in my knee. I collapsed right at that moment. Later I saw I was injured in many places. Amidst the chaos, cars, paramilitary vehicles and government buildings were set on fire, including the local office of India's ruling BJP party. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government has administered the Buddhist-Muslim enclave since 2019. It is very unfortunate and I am deeply shocked and aggrieved. I do not understand as to who gave the orders to shoot people. There are multiple Supreme Court judgments, there are multiple laws, guidelines as to how you should not resort to shooting people, but people have been shot. Officials say gatherings of more than five people and a curfew are now being enforced by hundreds of police and paramilitary officers in the Leh and Kargil districts. In a bid to find a solution, local representatives have held several rounds of talks with Indian officials in recent years. The next meeting is scheduled for early October.
