The announcement did not clarify whether these tariffs would be added to existing national tariffs or if countries with trade deals would be exempt. The ongoing use of tariffs has contributed to uncertainty in the global economic outlook and affected business decision-making.

Trump slaps fresh tariffs on heavy trucks, drugs and furniture

President Donald Trump on Thursday unleashed a fresh round of punishing tariffs on branded drugs, heavy-duty trucks, and some furniture items. Trump announced on True Social that starting October 1st, the U.S. would impose 25 percent tariffs on heavy-duty trucks, citing national security concerns. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce earlier urged the Treasury Department not to impose new truck tariffs, noting the top five import sources were either U.S. allies or close partners that did not present a threat to national security. Trump on Thursday also announced a new 100 percent tariff on any branded or patented pharmaceutical product. That, Trump said, will apply to all imports unless the company has already broken ground on building a manufacturing plant in the U.S. However, the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, an industry group, has said tariffs risk plans for U.S. investment by pharmaceutical companies. Finally, Trump said he would start charging a 50 percent tariff on kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities, as well as a 30 percent tariff on upholstered furniture. Trump said that tariff was necessary due to the, quote, large-scale flooding of these products into the United States by other outside countries. Last month, Trump promised new furniture tariffs that he said would bring jobs back to the U.S. According to government statistics, furniture and wood products manufacturing employment in the U.S. has halved since 2000, and in 2024, about 60 percent of furniture imports came from Vietnam and China, according to trade publication Furniture Today. Trump's post did not include details about whether the new levies would apply on top of national tariffs or whether economies with trade deals would be exempted. Tariffs have been a feature of Trump's second term, with duties on trading partners ranging from 10 to 50 percent, and other targeted tariffs on a wide variety of products. That push has cast a shadow over the global economic outlook and paralyzed business decision-making.
