Ambulance Victoria has issued a rare alert and is urging residents to save triple-zero calls for life-threatening emergencies only, as paramedics anticipate shortages due to road trauma, influenza and  respiratory cases.

Paramedics in Victoria are under significant strain as the health system contends with a surge in emergency calls caused by simultaneous outbreaks of COVID, influenza, and RSV. The increase in severe cases has led to an unusually high number of Code 1 emergencies, with some incidents requiring up to ten ambulance resources and extended response times.

The crisis is further exacerbated by preventable road accidents and staffing shortages, forcing paramedics to work overtime to maintain service levels. Authorities are urging the public to avoid unnecessary risks on the road and to consider alternative healthcare options, such as local GPs or virtual emergency departments, for non-life-threatening conditions.

The hundred additional Code 1 cases we're seeing every day this last week is unusually high. Preventable road tragedies compounding the crisis. Some of these cases are taking up to 10 ambulance resources and prolonged periods of time to provide care. Don't use your mobile phone while driving. Don't drive while fatigued. Don't speed. Reducing the risk of motor vehicle collisions saves our paramedics for life-threatening emergencies. While paramedics also grapple with increased illness and staffing shortages among their own. Our paramedics need to pick up additional shifts on overtime to support their colleagues to make sure that we've got the resources available. Unlike past issues with prank calls, this pressure comes from real emergencies. There are simply too many of them. So we've got paramedics tied up at cases and then we've got other cases going off with patients who are, you know, presenting in cardiac arrest with life-threatening illnesses. The opposition quick to point the finger at the state government. This should not come as a surprise to the health minister, to the premier or to the Ellen Lambert government that we see a spike in the need for health care during winter. With nearly 2,000 emergency cases daily and more than 1,000 calls requiring lights and sirens, ambulance Victoria fears the worst this evening. Paramedics are already stretched thin on what's typically the busiest night of the week. First think, is it more appropriate for me to be accessing my local GP? Is it more appropriate for me to access Victoria's virtual emergency department, nurse on call, my local pharmacist? Rebecca Powell, 10 News.
