Colorado State University has launched its first honeybee veterinary medicine course, allowing students to gain practical experience in diagnosing and treating honeybee health problems. The course was created in response to a 2017 requirement for beekeepers to work with veterinarians, despite most veterinarians having little experience with bees.

Students learn to identify and address threats such as Varroa mites, which spread viruses and damage bee colonies. Faculty and students emphasize the importance of honeybees to agriculture and food security, highlighting the need for specialized veterinary care for pollinators.

In tonight's Weekend Journal, CBS's Dylan Thomas takes us to a classroom at Colorado State University in the great outdoors. In a field near CSU. I've been very enamored by honeybees my entire life. Can you see, too, how the capping. Students and staff alike. Beekeeping is a meditative practice. Are quite literally getting hands-on learning experience. But there's so many. We're at the Colorado State University apiary. For this story, I had to suit up to find out what all the buzz is about. This here is CSU's first ever honeybee vet medicine course, showing that veterinarians can be involved with more than just cats, dogs, and other livestock. They belong here, too. Honeybee health is in decline. This one's a good one, right? In 2017. Oh, that's a nice looking brood frame. Which is why CSU is now offering this course. There's your deformed wing virus. To the joy of those in the CSU Honeybee Medicine Club, like Hannah Badenhoff. Pollinators, pollinators, pollinators. It's safe to say. I got stung and I barely noticed it. She loves studying these bees. I am taking a sample of bees that we have collected and they are in rubbing alcohol, so we kind of give them a shake here. And what we're looking for are Varroa mites. These little red dots here are the mites, which are the parasites that we are looking for for our honeybees. So that one has deformed wing virus. These mites, which are the biggest reason for the spread of viruses, are easily transferred and can eat away at the wings of bees. For the amount of bees that we have, the amount of bees that we took, this is way, way too many mites for these guys, so they will need some treatment. Professor Amy Franklin loves teaching in hives. When you're working a hive, you have to be in the present moment. Listening to the bees humming and watching them, it's really something special to see. Underscoring why these students and educators are exactly where they're meant to be. This is a livestock animal that is critically important to our agriculture and to our food security.
