A wildfire on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, has grown to over 2,100 hectares, roughly the size of the city of Victoria. The fire, now classified as a wildfire of note, has caused significant smoke in Port Alberni and surrounding areas, leading to increased anxiety among residents.

Authorities have issued evacuation alerts for several properties, though these are not yet evacuation orders. Local officials, including the mayor of Port Alberni and the chief councillor of the Sechott Nation, have urged residents not to panic, stating that there is currently no anticipated direct threat to the community. However, they note the situation remains fluid. Health concerns have been raised for vulnerable populations due to smoke and falling ash.

Yeah, so I'm right now at the Harbour Quay. You can see behind me it's quite hazy. There's quite a bit of smoke that's now settled into Port Alberni as the fire has continued to grow. This is actually where I was yesterday when the smoke hadn't settled in and we got to watch the smoke kind of roll in over the inlet. As of this morning, the last I heard, the fire was now at over 2,100 hectares in size. For context, I'm told that that's about the size of the city of Victoria. So it is quite a big fire. It's been designated a wildfire of note and it just continues to grow. As you can see, maybe behind me, there is a big plume of smoke that indicates where the fire is. But there's a few properties that have now been added to an evacuation alert. They're not quite on order yet, but some people I'm told have chosen to leave just because they don't feel safe. There's quite a bit of anxiety in the community right now and we're just waiting to hear from BC Wildfire for more later today. Claire, what about the larger threat here to the community and any potential long-term repercussions? So I did speak with the mayor of Port Alberni, Shari Minions, right before I spoke with you, as well as the chief councillor of the Sechott Nation, Ken Watts. His territory is right behind us as well. And both of them said that now is not the time to panic. They're not anticipating that there will be a threat to the community here. They're not anticipating that the fire will reach Port Alberni, but it is a very fluid situation and they can't tell you for sure. So it is still a lot up in the air, it is still very fluid as to what the direct threat is. But for those who are elderly, who are pregnant, who are sick, who have asthma, there is a bit of a threat with the wildfire smoke. It can affect quite a bit with that. So for people who are affected by the smoke, it is important to stay inside. I don't know if you can see around me right now, but there is a little bit of ash falling from the sky, which is just a reminder that this fire does continue to grow. It is posing those health threats, but a direct threat to the community, we're not seeing that quite yet.
