Chesney, who is Jewish, claims he refused to eat after staff violated kosher protocols and later resisted being weighed, fearing force-feeding. His attorney reports that Chesney suffered compression fractures to his vertebrae and has been unable to walk since the incident, also alleging inadequate medical care and mistreatment.

Weber County officials strongly dispute the characterization of Chesney's treatment, asserting that he is receiving medical care. The incident has raised concerns about religious discrimination and the handling of inmate medical needs. A notice has been filed with the county as a preliminary step to a potential lawsuit. The case follows a recent federal ruling against the jail in another inmate medical care case, which is currently under appeal.

The inmate says a dispute over his Jewish faith led to officers at the Weber County Jail breaking his vertebra. I don't know what they were doing to Corey, but I could hear in the background, Corey screaming. April Hollingsworth is the civil attorney for this man, Corey Chesney, an inmate at the Weber County Jail. Hollingsworth says Wednesday night, another inmate called her to say seven or eight officers were in Chesney cell. I couldn't hear what he was saying, but the inmate was telling me what he was saying, you know, screaming about his back, telling them to leave him alone. According to this notice, Hollingsworth sent Weber County. Problems began shortly after Chesney was booked into the jail in July of last year on suspicion of drugs and weapons offenses. Those charges are still pending. Chesney says he is Jewish and wanted a kosher meal. Chesney contends jail staff were touching his food, violating the kosher protocols. He refused to eat. Big thing with kosher meals is you don't have meat and dairy prepared together. Janice Ward is the board president of Congregation Brith Shalem in Ogden. She doesn't follow a kosher diet, but explained what it entails. Most states don't question when somebody says they want a kosher meal. Utah tends to question these inmates to make sure that they're actually Jewish. Jail staff wanted to weigh Chesney. He didn't want to do that because he knew he lost weight. He was afraid that they would start force feeding him, so he refused to get on the scale. It was kind of a series of assaults, and at some point he his back was injured. This November report from the Utah State Hospital says Chesney had compression fractures on two vertebrae, and he's been unable to walk since July 2024. Chesney was later returned to the Weber County Jail. Hollingsworth's notice to the county, a step required before filing a lawsuit, names the officers Chesney says injured him, contends his injuries have gone without proper treatment, and that he often has been left in his own waste, unable to bathe. Immediately they need to get him into a medical facility. Weber County Attorney Chris Allred in an email to FOX 13 said the sheriff's office strongly disputes the characterization of Mr. Chesney's treatment. A sheriff's spokesman declined an on-camera interview, but said Chesney's receiving medical care. The inmate who called me last night said it seems like they have an issue with his, you know, being Jewish, and that they've made comments and stuff that he had heard. That's something the sheriff's office should investigate to see if... Absolutely, I think all incidences of anti-Semitism, it's a hate incident, and they should all be reported. Meanwhile, Hollingsworth has been told Chesney has not eaten since Saturday after his kosher meals were revoked because he allegedly ordered a Nutter Butter from commissary. That cookie is certified kosher. In February, a federal judge ruled in favor of another Weber County jail inmate who says poor medical care led to him losing his scrotum.
