A U.S. Army veteran, George Retis, reported being tear-gassed and detained during a federal immigration raid at his workplace in Camarillo, California. Retis stated he was attempting to report for his security guard shift when he was caught up in the raid, despite identifying himself as a veteran and not participating in the protest. He alleges he was forcibly removed from his car, detained for three days without access to legal counsel or family contact, and placed on suicide watch while covered in tear gas. 

The Department of Homeland Security confirmed that charges against Retis were dropped, but his case, along with others, is still under review by the U.S. Attorney's Office. Retis has indicated plans to sue, claiming his rights as a U.S. citizen were violated. The incident has contributed to growing public disapproval of the administration's deportation program, as reflected in recent polling.

Turning now to the Trump administration's crackdown on illegal immigration. Since President Trump returned to office, more than 100,000 people have been detained for deportation, but the aggressive tactics are getting negative marks, according to the latest CBS News poll. 51% of those surveyed say they now disapprove of Trump's deportation program. That's 10% higher than in February. Immigration raids on workplaces has cast a wide net, and CBS's Nydia Cabazos reports U.S. citizens are being caught in it. This is a moment George Retis, a U.S. Army veteran, drove up for a security guard shift at Glass House Farms in Camarillo. He says he did not know about the ongoing immigration raid. He was met with protesters clashing with federal agents, but says he quickly identified himself. I'm a veteran, I'm not here to protest, I'm not here to fight you guys, I just wanna get to work. I got a family to feed, I still have bills to pay. As Retis began recording from his car, federal agents fired tear gas. Then his car window was broken. They sprayed me in the face with OC, and they dragged me out of the car and threw me on the ground, one kneeling on my neck and another one kneeling on my back. He alleges he did not interfere with the raid, yet was detained without explanation. He was transferred to the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles, where he was held for three days without his family knowing where he was. He missed his daughter's third birthday. They put me on suicide watch. They didn't give us access to a lawyer. They didn't let me call my family. They didn't even let me shower, even though I was covered in tear gas. Retis served four years in the military and says the incident triggered mental trauma from his deployment to Iraq. You proudly served your country. Are you still proud of your country? I'll always be proud of this country. It's disappointing that the same flag that I wore is the same one that's disrespecting everyone. Retis was detained just off of this road. He never made it to his post. Now he's under suspension, pending the conclusion of the ongoing investigation. I want change to happen, and I want everyone who was there that day and did anything wrong to be held accountable. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed Retis' charges were dropped, but said the U.S. Attorney's Office is reviewing his case, along with dozens of others for potential federal charges related to the execution of the federal search warrant in Camarillo. Now, when you're released, you finally make it home. You see your 3-year-old daughter. It was the best feeling ever. She sees me, and she just gets the biggest smile, and she just says, Daddy, and just runs up to me with, like, her arms opened up wide, and just it was the best feeling ever. It's a feeling I'll never forget. Um, she can do no wrong. She's everything to me. Retis says he plans to sue the Trump administration, claiming his rights as a U.S. citizen were violated.
