The decision impacts multiple cases involving Trump, including those related to his alleged involvement in attempts to overturn the 2020 election results and retention of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago home. A special counsel charged Trump, leading to the upcoming task for the district court to clarify the nature of his actions.

Both the Trump and Biden-Harris camps have responded to the ruling. Trump described it as a "big win for our constitution and for democracy," while the Biden-Harris campaign noted it doesn't alter the facts concerning the January 6th event.

A historic day at the Supreme Court in a 6-3 ruling, the justices deciding presidents have immunity for official acts carried out in office, but do not have immunity for unofficial acts. This case is going to have to go back to the district court, which is going to have to try to thread this needle to determine what in the case would not fall under these protections. The landmark case stems from charges brought against Trump by special counsel Jack Smith for his alleged involvement in attempts to overturn the 2020 election results. Monday's ruling means that case remains on hold. We get to have protections for presidents who are doing things while they are in office so that they don't come out and get targeted and criminally and civilly sued. And it's likely the same story for the two other cases still pending, one in federal court related to his retention of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago home, and the other in state court, another election conspiracy case brought by prosecutors in Fulton County, Georgia. There still needs to be a determination of whether Trump's actions were official public acts versus private acts. The former president reacted to the ruling telling Fox News Digital this is a quote big win for our constitution and for democracy.
