America's diplomatic force is the latest target of Trump administration’s job cuts, with more than 1,300 employees were fired from the U.S. State Department on Friday.

The U.S. State Department has terminated over 1,300 civil servants and foreign service officers as part of a significant restructuring initiative under the Trump administration. The affected bureaus include those dedicated to human rights, refugee assistance, and resettlement programs for Afghans and Iraqis who supported American forces.

Some offices are being reassigned to focus on border security and reducing undocumented immigration, aligning with White House priorities. While officials state the reduction is a result of organizational changes rather than targeted dismissals, advocates for U.S. diplomats caution that the cuts may weaken the nation's ability to respond to global challenges.

For these State Department civil servants and foreign service officers, Friday was their last day. Like others impacted by these cuts, I have two young kids at home who depend on my salary. The mass firing of federal employees and overall cuts in foreign assistance has made it difficult for many of us to find employment in the private sector. But we are resilient and will roll up our sleeves. We have no alternative. It's actually a sad day for our country and the impact is going to be felt in ways that people don't even understand quite yet. The eliminated bureaus focused on human rights, refugees, and helping Afghans and Iraqis who aided American forces resettle in the U.S. Some offices will be re-tasked to White House priorities such as border security and stemming undocumented immigration. Advocates for U.S. diplomats warn that the cuts will make the U.S. less safe. Now that we have the tensions in the Middle East, ascendance, China, and aggressive Russia, what are we doing pulling back the people who know how to deal with these tensions in the world? The State Department under Secretary Marco Rubio told Congress that the bureaus affected have become prone to what it calls ideological capture and radicalism. The reduction of force is a consequence of the reorg. It's not a consequence of trying to get rid of people. But if you've closed the bureau, you don't need those positions. Understand that some of these are positions that are being eliminated, not people. Meanwhile, hundreds of billions of dollars under Trump's budget are headed for military spending and mass deportations. Trump has said he wants his legacy to be that of a peacemaker.
