Despite Witkoff's assurances that Israeli leadership is committed to ending the conflict, families remain skeptical about the prospects for a comprehensive deal, citing unrealistic preconditions and ongoing hardship on both sides.

The message was clear, a message that seems to have resonated with the U.S. Special Envoy Steve Whitkoff as he toured what's now known as Hostage Square in Tel Aviv. It's from here that families keep the pressure, calling on their government to reach a ceasefire agreement. We're calling on the current Israeli government to stop stalling and to stop doing what it was meant to do since October 7th, 2023, to release all the hostages, to put an end to the war and do the right thing and just do it now. And we're calling on the American administration to start pulling strings. There's a renewed sense of urgency among these families. Images released recently by Hamas show an emaciated David Evatyar, an Israeli soldier still held captive in Gaza, have shocked Israel, perhaps convincing some that starvation is very real across the Strip. They very much resemble the harsh pictures of starved Palestinian children. The latest victim, 17-year-old Atif Abu Khater. His weight had gone down to 25 kilograms. That's what a nine-year-old should weigh. His heart too weak to keep him alive. His mother helpless as he gently faded away. Witkoff sat for about two hours with the families, listening to their stories, but it's unclear whether he managed to placate their anger. Just a few hours later, they were back at the square, denouncing their government with an even louder voice. Steve Witkoff told us clearly that Netanyahu is committed to ending the war. But we now understand that the statements issued by political sources two days ago, claiming a comprehensive deal is on the table, were empty slogans. The preconditions set by Israel are unrealistic and unworkable. Hungry Palestinians scavenging for food in Gaza also want a ceasefire, as each day that passes brings its share of death and grief.
