U.S. criticism has come from both the State Department and several Republican senators, who argue that Macron's push for Palestinian statehood is ill-timed and lacks influence. French President Emmanuel Macron is continuing his push for Palestinian statehood, though U.S. pressure reportedly forced him to back away from his own prior suggestions that he would recognize a Palestinian state next week at a two-state solution conference at the United Nations, which Paris is co-sponsoring, along with the Saudis. The State Department delivered a message earlier this week threatening potential diplomatic consequences for any country that takes anti-Israel actions after that conference, and is discouraging countries from even attending, claiming it's counterproductive to ending the Israel-Hamas war. A criticism of Macron is emanating from the U.S. Capitol, as well, where several Republican senators told Jewish Insider that Macron is trying to project power where none exist. Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri accused France of taking the U.S. for granted, while the always-colorful John Kennedy of Louisiana claimed the Bob Dylan classic, Blowing in the Wind, was named after Macron, and that the Frenchman has too much time on his hands and should be ignored. Germany and the U.K. run Europe, Kennedy said, while Macron is erratic. Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina said he tried to talk French officials out of their statehood push, telling them now is not the time, while Mark Wayne Mullen of Oklahoma said right now France is trying to be tough and to let them stand their own ground. France hosts the annual Paris Peace Forum this week, which will include a call for a two-state solution at an event tomorrow.
