Ukraine's President has called for more European air defence after a heavy overnight drone and missile strike from Russia. At least eight people were killed in the capital, Kyiv, in what Volodymyr Zelenskyy described as a 'wicked' attack.

More than 400 Russian drones and missiles struck Kyiv, forcing residents into shelters and resulting in the deaths of at least eight people, including six in a residential building. The attacks also caused injuries and damaged buildings such as the Azerbaijan embassy and energy infrastructure. 

Ukraine retaliated by targeting Russian oil refineries and pipelines, aiming to disrupt fuel supplies. Germany has agreed to provide $150 million to strengthen Ukraine's defenses with additional US arms, as international condemnation of attacks on civilians continues.

Unrelenting and unforgiving, more than 400 Russian drones and missiles rained down on Kyiv. The air raid sirens sounded shortly after midnight, residents forced into bunkers or apartment stairwells. In this block of flats, there was no time. Six were killed, a further two died in strikes near the Black Sea city. Russian aggression is growing, the war in Ukraine continues to rage. Dozens of others were injured and buildings damaged, including the Azerbaijan embassy and energy infrastructure. Attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure violate international humanitarian law. They are unacceptable wherever they occur. Moscow denies targeting civilian areas, while Ukraine has responded by launching its own drones and missiles, hitting oil refineries and pipelines to cripple the country's fuel sources. Ukraine must do everything so that no Russian strike goes unpunished. As the clean-up of Kyiv gets underway, Germany has agreed to foot a $150 million bill to bolster Ukraine's defences with more US arms.
