President Donald Trump has reportedly pressured Kyiv, suggesting that military aid may hinge on agreements to give the United States a portion of Ukraine's mineral benefits. Despite the sensitivity of the discussions, no agreement has been finalized. Ukrainian citizens, particularly in towns like Shovty Vody, known for its mining history, are wary of any arrangements that might compromise their country's rich mining legacy. Nina Fesenko, a resident of Shovty Vody, insists that the country's mineral wealth should remain with the people of Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently indicated that progress has been made in negotiations regarding a mineral revenue fund. With the deal at a critical juncture, Zelensky aims to balance foreign relations with internal expectations. The new agreement, as reported, will not be a repayment plan for past U.S. aid to Kyiv. Ukrainian lawmaker Ina Sovtsun highlighted the importance of considering future generations, emphasizing the need for sustainable economic prospects for Ukraine.

As the U.S. and Kyiv hammer out a mineral deal, Ukrainians from the mining heartlands have a message for Washington. The resources are theirs. Alexander is a resident of Krivyi Rih, a city near iron ore mining and processing plants. From what I can see, they only want to take, not to give. U.S. President Donald Trump has put pressure on Kyiv and threatened to stop the flow of military supplies, unless the U.S. gets some payback for the billions of dollars it spends in aid. Nothing has been agreed yet. They would like to, but you cannot have dealings with that ginger guy. He's not that kind of person. The deal is sensitive for Ukraine. About 40 miles north is the town of Shovty Vody, or Yellow Waters, where uranium and iron ore were mined for decades. Ukraine has a proud history of mining coal and iron ore, and hopes to exploit seams of increasingly sought-after rare earths. Shovty Vody resident Nina Fesenko. I hope that the people who are involved in this think about Ukraine and its people, because our mineral riches belong to the people. Mineral revenues are a crucial pillar of the state budget. President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday the negotiations on creating a mineral revenue fund had made progress. Zelensky knows he must win Trump over after a difficult relationship so far, but that there will be uproar at home if he makes a bad deal. Ukraine said on Sunday there was now agreement that the deal would not seek to pay for U.S. aid provided to Kyiv in the past. Ukrainian legislator Ina Sovtsun said negotiators had to consider future generations. It's also critically important when we are designing the future to keep in mind that people will live here in the future, my child will live here in the future, and we have to make sure that there are some economic prospects for this country as well.
