Recognizing the enduring importance of traditional defensive measures in modern warfare, Ukraine is focusing on constructing extensive fortifications.

President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that Ukraine is in the process of erecting 2,000 kilometers of defensive structures across three distinct lines, with a primary focus on the Sumy region which borders Russia over a stretch of 560 kilometers. Initiatives to reinforce this area commenced last year and have seen a marked increase since February. The regional capital, Sumy, is now encircled by these defensive barriers, and local authorities are confident in their ability to thwart any sudden Russian attacks.

The defensive fortifications include firing positions for troops to monitor and engage the enemy, as well as protective shelters for military vehicles and personnel. These are constructed from earth, wood, and reinforced concrete, and the effort to build them is ongoing around the clock, signaling the urgency of the situation. Additionally, defenses are being erected in the Chernihihiv region, near the border with Belarus, an area previously utilized by Russian forces to advance towards Kiev.

Part of the defensive strategy involves the implementation of "Dragon's Teeth" barriers, designed to impede the progress of tanks and armored vehicles, complemented by anti-tank ditches and mined areas to further deter enemy movements. Although the second line of defense, primarily located in eastern Ukraine, is less complex and lacks concrete reinforcements, it still plays a critical role in the overall defensive strategy.

The outermost line of defense is being constructed under hostile conditions by infantry brigades. It consists mainly of trenches and dugouts with wooden flooring, representing the initial barrier against advancing forces. Despite these fortifications indicating a significant defensive posture, Ukrainian authorities maintain that the goal remains to reclaim territory currently under Russian control.

Entering the third year of conflict, and after months of deadlock where Russian forces have managed incremental advances, these defensive structures are deemed crucial for Ukraine in its effort to counter any further Russian aggression.



Ukraine rushes to build, fortify defenses

Modern warfare may be high-tech, but trenches are still proving vital in Ukraine. Kiev is hoping all this will allow Ukraine's army to hold back Russian forces. President Zelensky says Ukraine is building 2,000 kilometers of fortifications in three lines. This is part of the innermost line of defense. And it's located in the Sumy region, which shares a 560-kilometer-long border with Russia. Work on defense structures began here last year, but intensified in February. The regional capital of Sumy is also encircled with defense lines. Local sources say they're confident that any surprise Russian attack would no longer break through these fortifications. We have firing positions here, so the soldiers can observe and fire on the enemy. They can also see the next line of defense that's closer to the front line. There's a shelter for vehicles and a dugout for the crew. It's made of earth, wood and reinforced concrete. Work continues around the clock. Time is of the essence, as a new Russian offensive is expected soon. Fortifications are also being built in the neighboring Chernihiv region, not far from the Belarusian border. In February 2022, Russian troops passed through this area to march on Kiev. These structures are known as Dragon's Teeth. They're designed to slow the progress of tanks and armored vehicles, giving the Ukrainian army more time to destroy them. Anti-tank ditches have been dug behind them, and the area around is mined. The second line of defense is less elaborate. These images show fortifications in eastern Ukraine. Here, too, there are anti-tank ditches, but no concrete. The outermost line of defense is built by infantry brigades. They have to build under fire. It consists of trenches and dugouts with wooden floors and is the weakest defense. The government insists that even if the army is digging in behind the current front lines, Ukraine isn't abandoning its intention to recapture territory from the Russians. But the war is in its third year. After months of stalemate, Russia has made a number of gains. Right now, defenses like these may be Ukraine's best hope of keeping Russian forces at bay.
