Starmer's strategy includes rallying support within his party and seeking economic growth to reduce the appeal of right-wing groups such as Reform UK. However, the effort faces challenges, including the need for investment from the US administration and the complexities of international cooperation among centre-left governments, each with their own domestic and foreign policy considerations.

Those that oppose them are struggling. I think there's a real panic amongst progressives around the world, the sort of centre-left parties like the Australian Labour Party, the British Labour Party, the Democrats in the US, the Liberals in Canada are all struggling to come up with a coherent set of policies that address people's concerns and are struggling to be heard in a chaotic media and social media environment. At a conference of centre-left leaders from around the world gathered in London, they and their advisers are trying to build a common approach. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer will deliver a speech that's being framed as the launch of a progressive fightback. Starmer's argument is that the UK is at a crossroads and his government will lead the fight against decline and division. It's an effort to rally his disaffected MPs and persuade them he's got what it takes to fend off the right-wing populists of Reform UK. And herein lies a problem. Starmer has calculated that creating the economic growth needed to dent the appeal of Reform UK requires soliciting investment from the very US administration that's been encouraging the populist right. And every centre-left government has its own domestic dynamics and its own relationship with an unpredictable Donald Trump to navigate.
