Atta, a non-profit organisation in Uganda, operates a human milk bank that collects, pasteurises and delivers donated breast milk to babies in need. The organisation has provided over 1,200 litres of milk to more than 650 babies since its launch in 2021. All donors are medically screened to ensure the safety of the milk.

The programme is designed to help fragile infants, including those born prematurely or whose mothers are unable to provide breast milk. One caregiver described how the service supported her adopted daughter, who was born prematurely and lost her mother during childbirth. The donor milk contributed to the baby's weight gain and recovery, enabling her to leave hospital.

Despite its benefits, the concept of shared breast milk is culturally sensitive in Uganda, drawing comparisons to blood transfusion in terms of societal acceptance. Advocates suggest that education is key to overcoming these cultural barriers. Prematurity is the leading cause of death among children under five worldwide, and Uganda’s neonatal mortality rate is reported at 19 per 1,000 live births.

The Ugandan government is taking steps to expand the milk bank initiative, with plans to establish more regional human milk banks across the country.

Atta, a Ugandan non-profit organisation, collects, pasteurises and delivers human milk to babies in need. Since its launch in 2021, it has delivered over 1200 litres of milk to more than 650 babies. All donors are medically screened. Still, the idea of shared breast milk remains culturally sensitive. It's like blood. If you have an accident and you need blood, will they transfuse you with their own blood? You get blood from another person. So if someone can get blood, which goes into your brain, which goes in everywhere, what of breast milk, which you take and you pass out? So the main thing is proper education of the communities and then some of these cultural barriers can be overcome. Prematurity remains the leading cause of death for children under five globally and Uganda is no exception, with a neonatal mortality rate of 19 per 1,000 live births. The Ugandan government is now taking steps to scale up the initiative with more regional human milk banks across the country. For Balibabwe and her adopted daughter, breast milk sharing was more than a medical solution. It was a gift of survival.
