For companies like Tyson Foods Inc., struggling to fill unpopular jobs, this new population presents an alluring opportunity.

Many migrants initially arriving in Texas or Florida have been taking buses to New York, a city that is actively trying to accommodate the rising numbers. The situation has caught the attention of companies like Tyson Foods, which are facing challenges in filling certain job vacancies, viewing this new wave of arrivals as a potential solution to their staffing needs.

Tyson wants to hire 52,000 asylum seekers for factory jobs and the company understands and they are aware that these are jobs that many find unpleasant. So we're talking about jobs like food packing, meat packing and washing meat and they say that the jobs start paying at $16.50 an hour plus benefits. So the company joined forces with a non-profit Tend Partnership for Refugees which is a network of over 400 companies around the world that are committing to helping asylum seekers find jobs and refugees also. And the plan is to hire as many people as possible from the 180,000 asylum seekers that have come through the shelter system here in New York City. In fact, Tyson already hires more than 42,000 immigrants. And I want to share new data that we just found. So according to an Economic Policy Institute analysis of federal data, about 50% of the labor markets recent growth came from foreign workers between January 23rd, 2023 and January 2024. The chair of the federal research said last week that quote immigration and labor participation contributed to economic growth. Let's take a listen now. The immigration that we saw was it was a notable factor of the 2023 and 2024 economic outcomes. And of course we're aware of that and it plays a role in our thinking about appropriate policy and the path of the economy. Well, Chris Bianca, the company Tyson in both tents, they are aware that many of these migrants, you know, are not eligible to work right now because they're waiting on their work permits. But they say that they want to make the process easy for these migrants. Chris, and Axel, like you said, a lot of these asylum seekers are not yet authorized to work. So how is the company trying to work around that? Well, they're saying that they are going to provide a lot of benefits for them. But I'm gonna go into that quickly in a second. But before I go into that, I want to say that, you know, so you know how the process looks like for these migrants. So here, the Roosevelt Hotel is one of the first places they see when they arrived to the city of New York. They come here to try to get a space in the shelter system in the city. And after they do that, they have to start the application process for asylum. So 180 days after that takes place, they're eligible to receive work permits. But many of them are not getting those work permits because the system because of the immigration backlogs, this is taking longer than expected. So the company says that they understand that these are migrant families, sometimes single mothers with Children. So they want to retain those workers by providing benefits such as temporary housing, a relocation stipend part time off to a better acclimate to their new lives. Employees will also receive on site childcare and transportation as well as paid time off off to attend court hearings. They're also saying that they're allocating $1.5 million to help them with legal services.
