In a significant development, Erdogan and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammad Shia' al-Sudani have signed a comprehensive agreement outlining a strategic cooperation roadmap across multiple domains. This agreement envisions the establishment of permanent joint committees focusing on security, energy, and economic issues. Furthermore, the leaders have ratified more than two dozen memoranda of understanding in a broad range of fields.

Among the priority areas outlined in the agreement, the management of shared water resources has emerged as a critical concern for Iraq. Conversely, Turkey has emphasized the importance of bolstering border security, specifically targeting the eradication of Kurdistan separatist fighters from the border area. Erdogan has particularly highlighted the need for concerted efforts to combat the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), a group designated as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States, and the European Union.

The visit is also anticipated to have significant implications for the semi-autonomous Kurdish region in Iraq, particularly in the realm of oil exports. Local hopes are high that Erdogan’s visit will facilitate the reopening of the Kirkuk-Cihan pipeline, which has been inactive since last year due to a disagreement over the export of oil without Baghdad's approval.

I welcomed the PKK being declared as a banned group and expressed a strong belief that the PKK's presence in Iraqi territory would end as soon as possible to my colleagues. Iraqis in the semi-autonomous Kurdish region hope the visit can pave the way for a resumption of oil exports through the Kirkuk-Cihan pipeline, which has been shut down since March last year. The Iraqi government has opposed Turkey, allowing the semi-autonomous Kurdish region to export oil through its lands without Baghdad's consent. After years of disputes over water and border security, Erdogan's visit is seen as the beginning of a new chapter in strategic cooperation between the two countries.
