The legislation reduces tax credits and incentives for renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and batteries, while promoting increased fossil fuel production.

Experts note that this shift may slow the growth of clean energy and could even trigger a resurgence in coal use, making it harder for the U.S. to meet the rapidly increasing energy demands of AI data centers. As energy costs rise or expansion slows, major technology companies like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon may face challenges in scaling their AI operations.

Trump's megabill impact on the U.S. AI race

Saint-level AI regulation for 10 years didn't make it into the final version of Trump's mega bill. But what did could actually be even more consequential, at least for AI development. Deirdre Bosa has more in today's Tech Check. Deirdre, do tell. So it's all about energy, right? AI needs power, and right now that is the bottleneck. But that newly signed bill just made it harder to add the cheapest, fastest growing sources of new power, solar, wind, batteries, by slashing tax credits and incentives. President Trump, he calls it energy dominance, more drilling, more permitting, more gas. But that will not scale fast enough to meet AI's demand. And America's data centers, they already consume more electricity than some countries, and that could triple by 2030. So this chart from Semi-Analysis I wanted to show you, it tells the story here. This isn't just a clean energy pivot. This is a capacity arms race. And China on the left, it's building everything from fossil to renewables, grids, storage. Its electricity generation has nearly tripled from 2005. U.S. capacity, meanwhile, on the right, it has barely moved in 20 years. And this law is likely to flatten or reverse solar and wind growth, extend gas's dominance, and it could trigger a coal rebound in parts of the country. But that is slower and more expensive to operate. This all has direct implications for the AI race at large, and certainly for investors, because every hyperscaler, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, they need power to build AI.
