Some people were hoping that in this national address, Trump might actually be announcing a U.S. withdrawal or a drawdown from the war with Iran. And the entire tone of Trump's address was going in quite a different direction, where Trump laid out the importance of the war, the rationale for the war as he sees it. Trump did not say how the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened. Iran's chokehold on the vital waterway has triggered what many analysts describe as the worst global energy shock in history. Analysts said Trump's speech and prospects of prolonged disruption to oil supplies have revived concerns about stagflation that roiled markets in March. Britain said on Thursday that about 40 countries are discussing joint action to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to stop Iran holding, quote, the global economy hostage. European diplomats said putting the coalition together was at an early stage, with Britain and France leading the effort. The United States was not involved.
