President Donald Trump has ordered the withdrawal of U.S. support from 66 international organizations, including several United Nations agencies and foundational climate agreements. Among the affected is the 1992 UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which underpins the Paris Agreement signed by 198 countries. 

The Trump administration cites concerns over redundancy, mismanagement, and threats to U.S. sovereignty as reasons for the decision. The move also includes ending participation in organizations focused on renewable energy and migration, prompting criticism from scientific groups and raising concerns about the potential global impact, particularly as other major economies continue to invest in climate action.

John Northcott is here to break it all down. John, 66 organizations, wide range, including the UNFCCC on climate. What's going on here? Yeah, well, as is so often the case when you cover the Trump administration, trying to just keep on top of the pace of change that he has instituted. He's signaled this earlier in his administration with pulling out of a number of treaties, organizations, decimating the USAID that provided so much assistance to people around the world. But this is really, many of the UN agencies that are focused in this, the U.S. taking kind of an a la carte approach to what they choose to fund and not fund in terms of their involvement with the United Nations. But it's that framework agreement that you talked about, 1992, 198 countries signed on around the world, becoming, as you well know, the framework for the Paris Agreement. Pulling out of that, the threats potentially around that being, does this give other countries license to then pull out? Pulling out of the Paris Agreement, he did shortly after being inaugurated, and that due to take effect in just a week or two, officially. But this, pulling out of this framework, that underpinning of the Paris Agreement, really has a lot of people around the world, the Union for Concerned Scientists simply saying this is a new low in terms of the Trump administration and the battle against climate change. Indeed, and it's not just the framework on climate change, it's also to do with nature, some science agreements. Migration. A huge range of what the Secretary of State has labeled as woke institutions, which are useless and overfunded, and they're just clearing the board, really. Why is he doing that? Well, let's look at the implicit and the explicit. The explicit is in the person of Marco Rubio, saying exactly that. The statement coming out, the Trump administration has found these institutions to be redundant and their scope mismanaged, unnecessary, wasteful, poorly run, goes on to say, a threat to our nation's sovereignty, freedoms, and general prosperity. That's what they're saying explicitly, implicitly, or implicitly, explicitly. We're seeing, as you were talking about earlier, what's going on with Venezuela, with the seizure of various oil tankers around the world, with threats to Greenland's sovereignty. We're increasingly getting more, not just on climate change, but on so many gripping international, life-changing for so many people around the world issues, the Trump administration simply saying they're not going to play. They're going to take their, not only their participation, but their funding, and go home and go their own way when it comes to dealing with so much around the world. Interesting to note that one of those organizations is the International Renewable Energy Association and the International Solar Alliance. Given what's happening in Venezuela, clearly a sharp left, left turn anyway on those. And then you're pointing out that so much of the world, including China, including the European allies, are moving quickly towards other forms of energy, towards combating climate change and aiming fully at putting the eggs in the fossil fuel basket, could eventually hurt the United States, not just other countries around the world. In fact, some response saying that China is getting a huge benefit from these types of policies in the United States. Handing it to them. Thank you.
