The announcement follows recent cancellations by high-profile artists in protest of the Trump administration. President Trump says the Kennedy Center will shut down for two years for renovations. The president announced on Truth Social over the weekend the Performing Arts Center will close after July 4th. Here's what he said today about the current state of the Kennedy Center. It's in very bad shape. It's run down. It's dilapidated. It's sort of dangerous. Things fall out. We're going to close it and we're going to make it unbelievable, far better than it ever was. The news can confirm there has been no discussion of tearing down or demolishing the building in order to accomplish this. In fact, our Ouija Jiang asked the president whether he intends to tear it down and he said, I'm not ripping it down. I'll be using the steel. We're using some of the marble and some of the marble comes down, but when it's open, it will be brand new and really beautiful. And he says it'll cost some $200 million. This announcement also comes after some pretty high profile artists have canceled their shows at the Kennedy Center. Several acts, including the Washington National Opera and composer Philip Glass said they would not perform in protest of the Trump administration. CBS News White House reporter Aaron Navarro joins us now. So Aaron, what more information do we have about the scope if it's not a true demolition and maybe how you or I would think of it? Yeah, that's how the president made it sound at first, that they would be really tearing it down to its steel beams. But sources did tell CBS News later that Trump's description of the renovations are a bit more aggressive than what is currently planned. And he has not officially made that ask for estimates on tearing down the building down to its beams. Sources have also told CBS News that planned changes do include a new roof and replacement of the marble and grout in the center. But the basic layout of the center's interior, of the hall and the three theaters, that will remain. We also have some numbers from the vice president of public relations at the Kennedy Center. She said that the center had $250 million of deferred maintenance needs. We also know in the budget proposal from the center sent to Congress last year, it does list ongoing projects such as roof repair or concert hall seating replacements. So renovations at the center had been needed and proposed, but it seems that Trump's vision goes much further. Let's talk about this arch next. What's going on there? Well, we know that it's a big part of the mark that Trump wants to make on the city. He says he wants to be the biggest arch in the world. The statement from a White House spokesperson also references this, saying that the president's bold vision will be imprinted upon the fabric of America and be felt by generations to come. The big news that we're learning, though, about the arch is that Trump had proposed for it to reach about 250 feet, which could cause problems for the flight paths coming in and out of DCA, the main airport here in D.C. But as of now, we have not yet seen the full kind of blueprint of what Trump wants. But he has signaled that he wants it to be very large.
