President Donald Trump is reportedly considering whether to intervene in the New York City mayoral race, specifically to block Democratic Socialist candidate Zoran Mamdani. According to the New York Times, Trump has discussed the race with former Governor Andrew Cuomo, though Cuomo's spokesperson denies recent contact regarding the election. 

Concerns have been raised among business leaders and some Republicans about Mamdani's policies, such as raising taxes on billionaires and freezing rent on rent-stabilized apartments. Mamdani responded by expressing confidence in New Yorkers' decision-making, while Cuomo's team emphasized that only one candidate can defend New York values and challenge Trump.

So we were here in Far Rockaway with the Democratic nominee Zoran Mamdani shortly after news broke that President Donald Trump is reportedly considering whether to intercede in the mayor's race. Now, according to the New York Times, President Trump even called former Governor Andrew Cuomo in recent weeks to discuss the race. Now, at least publicly, Trump and Cuomo have had a somewhat tumultuous relationship, especially during the COVID pandemic when the two regularly threw jabs at each other in press conferences. The Justice Department has also reportedly opened a probe into whether Cuomo lied to Congress about his handling of nursing home COVID deaths. But now that Mamdani has won the Democratic primary, there is some concern among business leaders and others in Trump's circle about how Mamdani's policies like raising taxes on billionaires and freezing the rent on rent-stabilized apartments will impact the city's economy. Some Republicans are now seeing Mamdani's possible win as an opportunity, potentially giving Republicans a better chance at the governor's race or even midterms next year. But Trump, who is a New Yorker and still owns property in the city, has reportedly voiced concern as well. Curtis Lee was a Republican candidate in the race, but is not closely aligned with Trump. According to the New York Times, the president cast doubt on Lee's chances in the general election, but said he personally liked Adams and added that he had always gotten along with Cuomo. Mamdani responding to the news today. Whatever Donald Trump seeks to do to influence the outcome of this election, I have more faith in New Yorkers themselves. What they want is someone who can stand up to an authoritarian administration and to the billionaires that gave us that administration. Now, a spokesperson for Cuomo issued a statement in response, saying, quote, the governor and the president have not spoken in some time. As far as I know, they have not discussed the race. They added, quote, there's only one candidate in the race who can effectively defend New York values and take on Donald Trump. The one official who already has Andrew Cuomo. Now, Cuomo's team did not specify exactly what they meant by haven't spoken with the president in some time, if that meant days, weeks or even months.
