AccuWeather's Alex DaSilva monitors multiple areas of the Atlantic including the Gulf of America, where conditions are beginning to become more favorable for potential tropical development.

East Coast of the United States

Meteorologists are closely monitoring several areas of potential tropical development across the Atlantic basin as hurricane season intensifies. The most immediate concern is a system off the US East Coast, which could bring heavy rain and flash flooding to the Southeast, though current forecasts indicate it is likely to move away from the mainland.

Further east, two tropical waves are being watched for possible development. One has a high chance of forming but is expected to turn out to sea due to a weakness in the Bermuda high, reducing the risk of direct US impacts. Another wave, yet to emerge from Africa, has a lower chance of development but could be steered toward the eastern Caribbean. Meteorologists emphasize the importance of staying updated as conditions can change.

Tropical waves developing in the Atlantic

Alex Sosnowski has been describing this in my favorite way. We have a fruit salad of potential tropical development. Yeah, look at all the potential areas across the Atlantic Basin. It's like lit up like a Christmas tree. We are officially kind of getting into the heart of the hurricane season. You know, it officially goes from June all the way to the end of November, but now we're really starting to get into true hurricane season. And you can see that by all of these different areas. The area of most concern in the short term is right off the East Coast, off of a stalled cold front, that homegrown development, that could bring some downpours here to portions of the Southeast. And then we have a couple of tropical waves that we have to watch over the next week or so out in the far Atlantic. Yeah, Alex, I've been separating this into categories, our homegrown development and our tropical waves, which is a newer thing we've been watching because we're at that point in the season where some of those tropical waves could develop. But let's start with that homegrown development because we could see impacts even by the end of the week. Yeah, indeed we could. Nothing really doing much right now. You don't really see a whole lot of showers and thunderstorms across, or just off the Southeast Coast right now. But I think that's gonna change here over the next 24 to 48 hours. We probably will get some lowering pressure in that area. And we could see a tropical depression or maybe even a tropical storm form in this area by late week. The good news is, is that the trends have been that this will move away from the United States. Yesterday, it looked like maybe it could get pushed in by that Bermuda high, but now it looks like it might parallel the coast a little bit more, which still will bring a lot of heavy rain, but it might not be as heavy as if the system actually pushed inland. Yeah, a lot of rain and flash flooding. I mean, we've been dealing with it for days at this point, unfortunately, more on the way. But now we gotta talk about the tropical waves. Yep, now we're really getting into tropical wave season, especially as you get into the month of August and then certainly into September. So here's one tropical wave that we're watching right now. We have a high chance of development here late in the week or early or over the weekend rather, generally gonna be moving Northwest. Now, the good news is, I think there's gonna be a break in that Bermuda high, a little bit of a weakness that's gonna allow this to turn away from the United States. So I think the chance of any direct US impacts from this particular tropical wave is pretty low at this time. And Alex, there's been a lot of chatter about this system specifically, this tropical wave, that it could become a hurricane. But like you're saying, even if it does develop into a hurricane, the Bermuda high is kind of ensuring we don't see direct impacts. Yeah, you can see the different colors on this Bermuda high. The dark purple indicates a stronger Bermuda high. This would be a little bit more of a concern and it could push the storm West. But right now the trend has been for the Bermuda high to be a little bit weaker, a little bit of a weakness in that Bermuda high would allow the storm to turn out to sea. Cannot completely rule out that it could get pushed West, but right now the trends are looking good that this should turn out to sea. All right, one more tropical wave to talk about. This one, a little bit in the longer term and a lower chance of development right now. Yeah, this one hasn't even come off of Africa yet. It's getting ready to come off in the next day or two. But again, this tropical wave train is something we're gonna have to watch throughout the hurricane season as we do every year. This wave though, I'm a little bit more concerned about. I think the Bermuda high builds in just in time after that first wave clears out. And this wave could get pushed towards the Eastern Caribbean. So we have a low chance of development on this one right now. This would be next week that we would really have to be watching it. It takes about 14 days or so for a tropical system to emerge from Africa and then come all the way across the Atlantic Basin. So we'll have plenty of time to watch this one. But right now I have my eye a little bit closer on this wave getting ready to emerge. Well, and really that wave kind of underscores the importance that people check back with us often for the latest forecast information. All right, AccuWeather lead hurricane expert, Alex DaSilva.
