The Caribbean is bracing for the impact of Tropical Storm Melissa, which formed in the Atlantic Ocean. CBS News meteorologist Jessica Burch has more details.

Tropical Storm Melissa has developed in the Caribbean and is being monitored by meteorologists and the National Hurricane Center. The storm currently has sustained winds of 50 miles per hour and is forecast to strengthen as it moves north over the coming days. 

The projected path of Melissa could affect islands including Puerto Rico, Jamaica, and Cuba, though it is not expected to make landfall in the United States. The storm's progress is being tracked with updated models, and authorities remain vigilant as the Atlantic hurricane season nears its end.

Sooner monitors to Puerto Rico now as a tropical storm system brews in the Caribbean. Islands like Puerto Rico, Jamaica, and Cuba could all be affected. Neurologist Jessica Birch is here now for more on those developments, Jess. And this is a breaking thing, too. I mean, just within the past couple of hours, we're now monitoring Tropical Storm Melissa as it's going to grow in size within the next couple of days, eventually into a Category 1 status as it pushes along the islands close to Puerto Rico, stretched all the way up into Cuba, and as mentioned, eventually pushing over Jamaica, too. This is what we're keeping a close eye on. Current sustained winds at 50 miles per hour. It is expected to strengthen as it continues to track its way north. We're going to monitor the Spaghetti models closely when it comes to where it's going to track off to, but as of now, it should and it will be moving its way north, right around the corner. So take a look behind me. I want to show you two things going on for us. Here's where it's at right now, and here's where it's going as we head into the next 72 hours. Once this pulls up, I'll show you Tropical Storm Melissa starting to grow in strength as it hits some warmer sea surface temperatures by Sunday morning, moving its way just across Jamaica as it continues to track its way to the north. Now, Spaghetti models, they're pretty finicky right now. The storm system will continue to track north and then start to stall a little bit, closer to Cuba, Dominican Republic. Not expected to make its way into the U.S. landfall by any means, but this is what we're going to monitor as we head into the coming days. Now, the National Weather Service, excuse me, the National Hurricane Center is on top of this, and another thing to mention, too, we're nearing the end of this season, at least in the Atlantic, but we're continuing to monitor any last storms closely. This one for the past week has started to grow in strength. There was a 90% chance just yesterday that it would grow into the next tropical storm, and here it is. Tropical Storm Melissa, we're monitoring closely. Now, you head over into the Eastern Pacific, we're also monitoring another system that will continue to track its way off into the east. That shouldn't have any impact, so when it comes to making a landfall, but we'll monitor that closely, too. For now, back to you, Muga. All right.
