Essential for transporting supplies to Russian forces, the bridge has a dual carriageway road and double track railway. Measuring 19 kilometres from east to west, it was a flagship Russian infrastructure project opened in 2018 to link Russia to Crimea after they annexed the peninsula four years earlier. Moscow said the bridge had only been closed for three hours, but it's a coup for Kyiv, just days after they launched a massive drone attack this weekend that destroyed dozens of Russian planes at airbases as far away as Siberia. But on Ukrainian soil, civilian casualties continue. Several were killed by rockets in the north-eastern city of Sumy, and dozens more were injured. A woman who was nearby suffered a severe abdominal injury. We dragged her into the pharmacy and did everything we could, but the injury was serious. I don't know what happened to her after that. Then the paramedics arrived, we helped load her into the vehicle and they took her to the hospital." Sumy has been a key hub for organising Ukraine's months-long incursion into the Kursk region and, as such, has been a frequent target of Russian strikes. President Zelensky said last week that Moscow was preparing to send tens of thousands of troops into the region. The cities of Odessa and Chernihiv were also targeted on Monday night, and the day after ceasefire negotiations in Istanbul, President Zelensky repeated his call for decisive action from Europe and the US to force Moscow into a ceasefire.
