After pleasant weather for Independence Day weekend, the risk for severe storms is back in the Northeast from July 7-8.

Severe thunderstorms have been reported across the Northeast, with multiple warnings in effect for parts of New York and western Pennsylvania. Heavy rainfall, large hail, and damaging winds are the main threats, and there is an elevated risk of flooding in affected regions.

The threat of severe weather is expected to continue, particularly along the I-95 corridor from New Jersey through Virginia. In addition to storm activity, several cities in the western United States are experiencing temperatures significantly above historical averages, with some areas approaching record-breaking heat.

Thunderstorms return to the Northeast

We also have multiple severe thunderstorm warnings across the northeast as well. So this has been a very active afternoon here for us. We have multiple severe thunderstorm warnings in effect for parts of New York and also in effect for parts of western PA. Syracuse just got rocked earlier this afternoon with heavy storms, strong storms moving in. Now we have some of these storms working their way just to the east now of Highway 81 there from just to the south of Syracuse over towards Cortland County down through Elmira. So heads up for that. On down the line here for western PA, once again we have multiple severe thunderstorm warnings. These storms are pretty much paralleling I-80, but the strongest storms are actually going to be to the south of I-80 that we'll be watching out for. So Butler, we're about to see a pretty strong storm moving in right there with heavy rainfall. There will be a flooding threat with these storms as well as we head into this evening. So overall for today, any storms that form in this highlighted region stretching from Charleston and Columbus all the way through parts of New England, we'll be watching out for a large hail and damaging wind threat. There's even going to be an elevated threat for flooding rainfall as well here as we head throughout this afternoon and this evening. Heading into tomorrow, this is your Tuesday forecast, we'll be tracking a stretch of I-95 from Jersey, Pennsylvania down through Virginia where we'll see that risk of severe weather here, a level two risk for your Tuesday afternoon and Tuesday evening. Now let's look at some of the cities that will see warmer than usual temperatures here as we head into tomorrow. And as you can see, especially in a Yakima, Washington, yeah, anytime you see temperatures 14 degrees above historical averages, that's when you start to get into record-breaking territory. Same thing for Boise, same thing for Tucson, even Phoenix is going to be well above average there for temperatures for your Tuesday afternoon.
