Three people died in Bangladesh on Friday (July 19) in fresh protests against quotas for government jobs, media said, as telecoms links were widely disrupted, and television news channels went off the air.

Escalating tensions in Dhaka, Bangladesh, have resulted in the deaths of several people as violent clashes between student protesters and riot police continue. Initiated over opposition to the current quota system for government jobs, the unrest has left dozens dead and hundreds injured. Protesters argue the system unfairly favors descendants of veterans from the 1971 war of independence, advocating instead for a merit-based system.

Amid the uproar, police used rubber bullets to disperse the crowds, prompting protesters to retaliate by attacking the state broadcaster BTV and setting its reception area on fire. The previous day, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had appeared on BTV, urging calm. Reports from the scene describe severe brutality by the police, allegedly assisted by the ruling party's student wing, the Chhatra League.

In an attempt to control the situation, authorities have imposed a near-total internet blackout and ordered the closure of schools and universities indefinitely. Amnesty International has reported evidence of unlawful force used by security forces against students.

Why is the police force against us? We want proper justice. The BTV attack comes a day after the country's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina appeared on the network to call for calm. The protesters are fighting to end a quota system for government jobs, in which 30% of the roles are reserved for descendants of veterans who fought in Bangladesh's 1971 war of independence. Protesters want an end to this quota system. They say it's discriminatory and benefits supporters of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, whose Awami League party led the independence movement. Instead, they want a system that's based on merit. To quell the protest, Bangladeshi authorities have launched a near-total internet blackout with an indefinite school and university closure. According to Amnesty International, there's evidence that security forces have used unlawful force against students.
