Thousands of demonstrators, representing both support and opposition, gathered in Seoul regarding the political controversies involving President Yoon Suk Yeol. This followed an unsuccessful attempt to detain Yoon, who is currently suspended from office, on charges related to a temporary martial law decree that precipitated his impeachment. The President's legal defense maintains his immunity from prosecution amidst these proceedings.

Amidst heightened tensions, supporters of Yoon and the People Power Party criticized the Corruption Investigation Office, accusing it of politically driven actions. They argue that the office has not effectively served its purpose over the past few years but is now taking a political stance in an alleged bid to validate its existence.

Anti-Yoon protesters attempted to march to the president's residence, expressing mounting dissatisfaction with the ongoing political situation. They criticized the presidential security forces, accusing them of unlawful actions and inciting unrest. As the political deadlock persists, mass protests from both sides appear likely to continue. International components have also emerged, with pro-Yoon rally attendees reportedly using the slogan "stop the steal," reminiscent of U.S. political rhetoric. Concurrently, diplomatic discussions are underway in Seoul, with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s visit scheduled as the arrest warrant deadline approaches.

Supporters of President Yun Seok-yol out in force to back their embattled leader, a day after a failed bid to arrest him and bring him in for questioning. They were loud and colourful, many appearing emboldened by Yun's refusal to comply with a warrant against him. Yun's legal team argues the president, who is currently suspended from office, has immunity from prosecution. Supporters of the governing People Power Party have pounced on the bungled arrest attempt and criticised the Corruption Investigation Office in charge of the probe into the political crisis, accusing it of arrogance. Over the past four years, the CIO has failed to demonstrate any meaningful role or function, and now it's displaying an excessively political stance in a bid to seize this opportunity to justify its existence. Earlier in the day, police blocked a march by anti-Yun demonstrators on the president's official residence, where he's been staying since last month. There's growing anger and frustration over the position he's taken. A month has passed since the December 3rd insurrection, yet the ringleader of the insurrection has not been arrested and remains holed up in the official residence and inciting civil war. The presidential security service has degenerated into insurrectionary militia, destroying the rule of law and engaging in illegal acts. So long as the stalemate continues, regular mass protests look likely to go on. One of the things we're seeing at rallies in support of President Yun is many people holding up signs saying, stop the steal. Those backing President Yun appear to have adopted the slogan made popular by Donald Trump and say they hope the U.S. president-elect will come and help their leader. That echoes claims in the U.S. of right-wing politicians and parties being denied victory in elections. Many people here say parliamentary elections that led to Yun losing his grip on South Korea's legislature were fraudulent. Investigators have until Monday to execute the arrest warrant against Yun.
